How long will groups travel in a day?  10 miles is about average for a day of traveling in the BWCA.  this includes paddling and portaging.  Depending on weather and other factors groups can travel as little as 5 miles and as much as 20 miles in a day; however neither are very typical

What will a typical day consist of?
  • Wake up and break down camp
  • Eat breakfast
  • Get on the water  (paddle and portage)
  • Lunch (at a campsite which may or may not be where you will make camp
  • Travel and find a campsite
  • Set up camp (set up tents, get water, gather fire wood,)
  • Relax, fish, read, explore, swim, play cards
  • Cook dinner and eat
  • Clean up camp and relax by the fire for the night
There will also be 1 or 2 layover days where groups will not breakdown camp and travel

Sample routes that we travel

Ely

Voted one of the best small towns in America by Outside Magazine.

On the way up to the BWCA we will eat breakfast, shop for souvenirs,  get snacks/drinks at Zup's and go to the International Wolf Center.
This is the last area of true civilization before we get to Williams and Hall.

After the trip we will stop in Ely again to get snacks/drinks at Zup's and buy any souvenir they might still want

Base Camp-Williams and Hall

Night Zero will be at Williams and Hall.  The last true bed and kitchen cooked meal for the next week will be here.  Kids will be introduced to their guides and other group members, organizing their gear, and preparing for an amazing adventure. Fishing licenses can be purchased here

Day 5 of the trip will end here and the kids can take showers,  buy maps from the trip and have their guides help them mark the places they have been.  Dinner will be here before the bus ride back to Ohio

Canoeing

We will be canoeing and portaging for 7 days.  You will carry everything you bring with you.  You might even be carrying a canoe.

We will be working as a team to get from start to finish, all the while learning about ourselves, our group members and the BWCA.
